Four Elms Primary School

WB 22.02.2021

Welcome back class 3, we hope you had a restful half term and are ready to get started with our new learning for this term!

This week: You will notice that the lessons are categorised as PRIORITY lessons, SHOULD lessons and COULD lessons. This means that if you can only do a certain amount, focus on the lessons that are labelled as PRIORITY. These are lessons that are the foundations of our learning and are integral to what we do as we move forwards. The SHOULD lessons are ones to try and and complete and the COULD lessons are for you to decide as a family.

English - UG, Boy Genius of the Stone Age by Raymond Briggs

The teaching sequence provides opportunities to explore the relationship between words and illustrations in a comic book and how the design and layout of panels on each page support the narrative.

The introduction to this text, we will be ultimately focussing on the fact that the story is written as a comic/graphic novel, and that this will be the theme of our outcome at the end of next week.

However, for the first few days we will focus in on important character traits and some of the key themes of the story first so we are well prepared to use the characters in our own comic/ graphic novel version next week.

The children must understand who the characters are and what motivates them as well as the features of graphic novels to be able to achieve the outcome next week.

I have put a link to a YouTube video of the story in the English resources tab in the Resources to Support Home Learning Tab on the left, but please don't share this with the children before Monday. We will be doing some predictions so they should not know they story before we begin.

Maths - Units of measure

This week year 3 will be learning to measure, compare, add and subtract mass (kg/g). Year 4 will learn how to estimate, compare and calculate different measures and convert between different units of measure. On Friday there is an opportunity to consolidate their learning and see how much they have understood.

There are some knowledge organisers and measure resources for mass int he maths tab in Resources to Support Home Learning on the left.

The Afternoons

As per Mrs Mitchell's email before half term, all afternoon work will be practical and family based. There will be a selection of activities/projects set that will be accessed by all children across the federation. This means siblings can do this together. These will be shared on a Sunday evening so you can share these with your children in advance and they can decide what they would like to do.

Support resources:

For those of you who might light a little additional support/resources for your learning, there are extra supports in the tab on the left named 'Resources to support home learning'. We will be adding resources to the English and Maths tabs which will support the tasks we are doing this week. I will also attach resources to the daily webpage.
