Learning

9-9:30

This is a ‘Should lesson’. Please do it if you can but the priority is the maths and English.

No guided reading today as we are starting the new text within our English lesson. Instead I would like you to go onto IDL numeracy and complete an assessment. Your IDL web app (idlsgroup.com)

I will look at your scores at the end of the day and see if you managed to beat your last assessment. Remember, make sure you listen to the question carefully and select the correct answer. Accuracy is better than speed.

9:30 – 10.30

TASK 1:

Using the copy of the inside cover illustration which depicts the key characters: Ug, Dugs, Dug and Ag, scribe your ideas around the edge of the picture based on following questions:

  • What is the first thing you notice about the illustration?
  • What can you tell about these characters?
  • What assumptions might we make about them based on their appearance, their dress, their facial expressions, etc.
  • What clues are there that might allow us to starting predicting what this story might be about?
  • Who is the main character?
  • Where might it be set?
  • What could happen?
  • What position might the character be in at the start of the story and how might this have changed by the end?

Now look at book cover. What do you notice? What more can we tell from the cover of the book? Does it confirm our original thoughts about the story? What questions or puzzles do we have about the story? What do we want to find out? Do our early impressions of this story remind us of anything else that we’ve read/seen/experienced?

Create 5 questions that you would either like to find out about during the course of the story, or that you have about the characters that you didn’t before.

We are going to extend our questioning skills. The subtitle displayed on the cover might confirm some early predictions that the story is set in the Stone Age, but what do we already know about the Stone Age? If you have tentative thoughts about the era but are unsure whether or not they are true, write these as questions. What we know about the Stone Age: What we would like to know: What we have found out.
