Four Elms Primary School

Thursday 23rd April 2020

Welcome to your learning for today class 3.

Today you will be doing a short guided reading activity which is based around poetry. If you cannot finish the whole thing just do as much as you can in 20 minutes and then use the last 5/10 minutes to use the video to mark your work.

In English you are having a go writing your poem. There is a writing frame to help you get started or you can make it up yourself. The great thing about free verse is you don't have to make it rhyme and it can be as long or as short as you want so you are completely in control!

Maths is continuing with fractions. Let me know if you are struggling with this.

Challenge work is collecting your ideas, choosing your favourite and starting your final version. This is the really fun bit!

Don't forget to read to an adult at some point today. :)

Let me know if you need anything at all and don't forget to send me your work and see how many raffle tickets you can get!!

LO: to write a poem (including adverbials, noun phrases and similes)

SC1: I can write a poem

SC2: I can use adverbials, noun phrases and similes

SC3: I can evaluate my work with help

Today is our practise run for writing our final poem about the view from your own window tomorrow. We are going to practise putting all the skills into place that you have been learning.

Decide which view from a window you want to write about. Look carefully. Describe what you can see using the rich language you have been practising. Think about what words, phrases and descriptions you might like to use. Write it as a poem underneath. Remember, poems do not need to rhyme but they can if you want. Each verse should reflect one area of the picture. Think about all the poems you have read so far; each verse tends to focus on one feature. Work your way through the picture describing what you see. (There is a writing frame if you are struggling to get started with this.

Read your poem to an adult. Can they give you some feedback? Is your handwriting neatly joined, have you checked your spelling and punctuation? How could it be improved? Use the checklist of features we have been working on this week and make sure you have got all of them. Look at using expanded noun phrases and adding adverbials. Think about similes that could be used. This is your practise run for tomorrow so this is the time to make your mistakes and get feedback so that tomorrow you can concentrate on doing the best possible version of your poem ready to be published.

LO: to understand how to count in tenths and identify where fractions (tenths) go on a number line

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

Click on week 1 lesson 4. Watch the tutorial and then answer the questions. You can use the mark sheet to see how accurate you were.

Extension – Recognise and count in tenths. Year 3 if you are feeling confident then give this a go. Year 4, you pre-existing knowledge of fractions and the revision you have just done should mean that you can complete this. If you are struggling let me know. There is an answer sheet to be able to mark your work.

How many ideas can I think of?

Take photos from as many places as you can from windows in your house. Think about angle and time of day. You might want to do this part at a different time of day if you wish to create, for example, a sunrise or a sunset. One of my favourite times of day is dusk as it creates such beautiful colour. Print them off and stick them in to you books. They don’t need to be big. Have a look at mine to see what I mean.

What is the best idea?

Now you need to choose which is your favourite and you are going to use this to create your landscape. You need to put a copy of that picture in your journal and write an explanation of why you chose it. Reasons might include, things to do with the view, the time of day, the skills you have been learning and being able to implement. Make sure you give this careful consideration as once you have chosen you will have to stick with that one until the end.

2:00- 2:15

Exercise – e.g. mindfulness yoga, fresh air in the garden, run up and down the stairs seeing if you can get faster every time!

2:15-3:00

Let do it!

Now is the part where you take your final idea and create your landscape. You need to include all of the skills we have learned so far. Create perspective in your picture to give it depth. Start by sketching the outline of your landscape, then begin to add the finer details. Once you have this, leave the colour for tomorrow. Take your time. If you need to take a few attempts, do so. No-one gets it exactly right on the first try. Keep a record of your tries though, this is evidence of the learning you are doing and how you are developing your skills. Remember, artists take may attempts before doing their final pieces and they have practised many times before they get it the way they want it to be.
