If you are a Lexia person you must complete Lexia during this time instead of guided reading. 

Today your guided reading questions are based on comprehension. These will focus on the different skills we use in reading including retrieval, summarising, inference, questioning and prediction. Make sure you use the text to support your answers where necessary.  

9:50-10:30 

Maths 

LO: to plot coordinates to draw polygons. 

SC1: I can label the x-axis and y-axis. 

SC2: I know that a coordinate is represented by two numbers in brackets, separated by a comma. 

SC3: I can read a coordinate correctly by going along and then up. 

Reading, Writing and Plotting Coordinates: Look at the Lesson Presentation to remember that a coordinate is a way to locate a position on a map or graph by indicating how many units along, and how many units up the position is. The features of coordinates are that they are recorded inside brackets, separated by a comma. One of the most important thing to remember is to read and write coordinates in the correct order (along then up). 

Coordinate Squares: If you can, work together in their pairs to plot the given coordinates of four different size squares on the Coordinate Squares Resource Sheet. If you don’t have a partner you can still do this activity completely independently. 

Spot the Mistake: Using the Lesson Presentation, look at the shapes plotted on the grid from the given coordinates and identify which coordinate has been incorrectly plotted and why the mistake may have been made. 

Coordinate Polygons: Choose your challenge. 1 star is the easiest and 3 star is the hardest. If you choose a challenge and it is too hard, don’t finish it, swap to an easier one. Similarly, if you choose one that is too easy, swap to a harder one. Think about which star challenge I normally give you at school. 

If you finish this and you want an extension, I have added one but do not spend ages doing this. Only do the extension is you have time. This will really work on your justification and reasoning which is a very important part of your maths curriculum. Year 4 you should definitely give this a go if you have time. 

Sheepdog Championship: Using the Sheepdog Championship Resource Sheet follow the instructions to take it in turns to take a card off the pile and plot the given coordinates on their game board. Successfully round up all the sheep within 

the shape created. The winner is the player who rounds up the most sheep after four goes.

L.O: To plan a newspaper report 

SC1: I can recall what is important to be included in a newspaper report 

SC2: I can show what key information I am going to include in my newspaper 

SC3: I can create a template for my newspaper article 

Today we will be writing our Newspaper reports in rough (notes only). We will use what we have written and learnt over the past two days to help us. Remind yourself of the various parts to a newspaper article: 

Headline, paragraphs, quotes, 5 Ws, pictures with captions. 

Use the planning worksheet to think about all the information you need to include. You can do this on the sheet or you can create your own version in your book. If you do it in your book, make sure you keep it neat and use a ruler for any lines you draw. 

Once you have planned the content, you are then going to design your newspaper page. I have uploaded some examples to help you but you need to design your own. By the end of this lesson you will know what your article will include and have created a template ready for writing tomorrow.

Generate – how many ideas can you think of? 

LO: To generate ideas for thing to put in a time capsule 

SC1: I can record ideas about what I can put into a time capsule 

SC2: I can decide what things are practical for me to include 

Today we are going to think of some ideas of what we could include in our own time capsules. There are many different things you could include and I would like you to write all the possibilities even if you don’t end up choosing them all. We know that our first idea is not always our best so the more ideas we have the more choice we have for the final product. 

We would like you to record all of your ideas in your journals. Again, this should be recorded just like you would in your reflective journals – using writing, pictures and loads of colour! We don’t mind how you choose to do this, find a way that is comfortable for you but it should be well presented. 

After you have thought of different ideas for your time capsule, we would like you to choose your favourite ideas. Think about practicalities – will you actually be able to make/create/find these items to include? You will be using the next couple of afternoons to find and make these things so make sure you can actually get them. Identify the ideas you are going to use, this could be highlighting them, starring them or another way of your choosing.

Exercise – e.g. mindfulness yoga, fresh air in the garden, run up and down the stairs seeing if you can get faster every time!

LO: to create/collect the item for a time capsule 

So now you know what it is you want to include, you need to start collecting and making the things you want to include. There should be some things that you simply need to collect but there will be other things you need to make. For mine I need to make a diary entry that shows what a typical day is like and make a family tree. I need to collect newspaper clippings, photos and letters. I may need to print off photos of things like the NHS rainbows or I could create my own. 

You could make a plan of how to use tomorrow afternoon to have everything you need. Organisation is key! 

I will add some photos of the things I am doing to make my time capsule to help you as you go.
