Curiouser and Curiouser (2020-2021)
We have started this year with an amazing Federation experience based on 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Lewis Caroll. Please see the rationale below for more details.
Here are a few photos from our hook day. The staff surprised the children by dressing up as characters from Alice in Wonderland.
Class three have been focussing on chapter 6, the part of the story where Alice meets the Cheshire cat. For our hook, we had a go at making UV torches and tried to find the cat's smile hidden around the classroom.
In our art, we have been investigating colour. Firstly learning the primary, secondary and tertiary colours and then having a go at colour mixing to create the colours we need for our paintings.
We have been looking closely at how artists use brush stroke techniques and developing our skills with this. We practised making brush strokes, then used them to blend colours and finally used the inspiration of Starry Night by Van Gogh to imitate art work that uses brush stroke techniques.
We had to demonstrate great perseverance to be able to create the best possible outcome, completing not 1 but 2 drafts before doing our final version.
In English we worked hard, editing and improving our writing to create a fantastic descriptive piece when Alice met the Cheshire Cat.
Finally, for the cat to magically appear in the tree, our cat to be just as amazing out our background. Therefore we practise sketching parts of the cat until we were confident enough to draw him completely. You'll have to wait and see the amazing magic trick of how the cat appears in the tree at our gallery!!
Finally, we reflected on our learning during this experience to really think about what we had learnt and where we might need to take our learning next. The children are becoming very confident with thinking about their skills.
