Have you ever read any comics or graphic novels? There are now many books written for children that are written in this style (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dog Man, The Adventures of Captain Underpants, Asterix, Tom Gates’ books).

Do you have any at home? Can you make a list of any you have read? Why are you a fan? What makes them easier/ more enjoyable to read? What is it you love about them? Can you write a mini review about one you have read including all these questions?

If you need a little support, please watch this additional video;

Watch the ‘Features of a Comic’ PowerPoint

We would like you to analyse and identify the key features of a comic/ graphic novel.

You can choose an example of a graphic novel page online like I have in my example (or if you would prefer, and you have one at home, use your own) and either print it/ take a photo and stick on another piece of paper OR create a document on your computer. Then using arrows, text boxes and explanations, identify and explain each feature.

If you can make your learning look interesting and attractive (perhaps in the style of a comic) even better!!

EXTENSION:

Now you have more expertise, make it your mission to read/ re-read a comic/ graphic novel… you may have one at home already/ a sibling might have a copy or once we are back at school, there are some available there! Can you find examples of graphic novels that do not have the features we have identified? What impact does it have on the story or the text? Why do you think the author has chosen to do this?
